A STUDY ON THE SOLUBILITY OF GLASS IONOMER LUTING CEMENTS

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the solubility of glass ionomer luting cements.
For this study, two commercial luting cements were immersed in acid solution under various conditions. The amounts of F, Al, Si and Ca eluted from the cement into the solution were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometer and fluoride specific ion electrode.
The results were as follows:
1. When the diameter of the cement disk was changed, the amounts of eluted species were de-pendent on its surf ace area.
2. When the thickness of the cement disk was changed, the amounts of eluted species were dependent on its surface area regardless of its thickness.
3. The cement aged for 24 hours gave less dissolution than did the one aged for one hour.
4. Dissolving ability of the solution was in the order of citric acid, acetic acid, lactic acid and distilled water.
5 The cement immersed in 0.001 mol/L of acetic acid gave less dissolution than did the one in 0.01 mol/L of acetic acid.
6. The amounts of F, Al, Si and Ca were proportional to the square root of immersion time until 7 days at least.
